As part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce"s Hiring Our Heroes program, General Electric Co. plans to hire 5,000 veterans over the next five years and invest $580 million to expand its aviation business. Launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment, Hiring Our Heroes created a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day. Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 610 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Through March 31, 2013, 20,200 veterans and military spouses had obtained jobs.
Branching off the initial Hiring Our Heroes program, GE's new collaborative program, Get Skills to Work, joins major manufacturers and educators to prepare and place veterans in long-term careers. GE's transition assistance workshop and one-on-one mentoring sessions featuring GE's veteran employees will focus on resume building and writing, as well as interviewing techniques. These seminars are designed to help military personnel successfully communicate the skills they learned in the military to the corporate world.
